Outdoor beginner plants

These carnivorous plants are ideal for outdoor full sun. Due to their bright contrasting colors and easy care, Sarracenia (trumpet pitcher plant) is not surprisingly one of the most popular carnivorous plants in the Netherlands and Belgium. If necessary, Sarracenia can also be kept indoors as long as they are kept cool in winter. They love plenty of sunlight, for example, in front of a south-facing window. The plants in this category can be delivered in pots and always with care tips!

Frequently Asked Questions - Carnivorous Plants for Garden and Balcony

Can I also put these plants indoors?

Yes! An outdoor plant will grow perfectly well indoors, provided you have a south-facing window and keep it cool in winter (preferably <15°C). But honestly: outdoors they catch many more insects and grow faster. So, ideally, place them outside on your patio or in the garden.

Are these plants winter hardy?

Yes! These are hardy species that can stay outdoors all year round. In winter, they go dormant, the pitchers die back and the plant can be reduced to just the growth point and roots. But don't worry, you can cut off the brown leaves, and in spring, they will grow back stronger. So, they don't need to be brought indoors in winter. Make sure the plants are in a larger pot than the nursery pots they arrive in. Small pots can freeze quickly!

How much sun do they need?

As much as possible! These species love full sun. The more sun, the more beautiful the color of the pitchers and the more insects they catch. So place them in your sunniest spot: patio, balcony or garden. Several hours of direct sunlight are recommended.

How many insects do they catch?

Plenty! Outdoors, they naturally catch flies and wasps. You really don't need to feed them. They are essentially your garden's natural pest controllers.

Do I need anything else (soil) and how are the plants delivered?

The plants in this beginner category are delivered potted (with our 100% delivery guarantee). Place them immediately on a saucer with water after unpacking. Do you want them to grow quickly and have no problems in winter? Put them in a larger pot, filled with our carnivorous plant soil mix.

Can I put a Venus flytrap together with a trumpet pitcher plant?

Yes! Venus flytraps (Dionaea) and trumpet pitchers (Sarracenia) even often occur together in nature and have similar care requirements.
