Sarracenia rubra
Sarracenia rubra owes its name to the Latin "rubra", which means red. The flowers of this plant are indeed completely red. The plant flowers in spring, often producing a multitude of small blossoms. These flowers are often smaller than those of other Sarracenia species, but there are usually more of them. The scent of the flowers is often described as pleasant in this species. However, the ornamental value, as with other pitcher plants, lies in the carnivorous pitchers. The pitchers of Sarracenia rubra grow to between 30 and 60 cm tall, depending on the plant's genetics. Nowadays, the subspecies alabamensis and jonesii are considered species in their own right, and the species rubra then has the subspecies ssp. rubra, ssp. gulfensis, ssp. wherryi and ssp. viatorum.
