Purple pitcher plant

Sarracenia purpurea is a carnivorous plant that grows less in height and therefore remains beautifully compact. It is the most widespread species of pitcher plant in the wild, with some forms even found as far north as Canada. This pitcher plant also largely retains its pitchers in winter. There are two subspecies: ssp. venosa and ssp. purpurea. Especially the latter is very hardy and ideal as an outdoor plant. There are also two entirely green forms: ssp. purpurea f. heterophylla and ssp. venosa f. pallidiflora, but the species is mainly known for its beautiful purple-red pitcher; its English name "The purple pitcher plant" is no coincidence! The southernmost form S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii is now considered a species in its own right: Sarracenia rosea.

Sarracenia purpurea is also the species used to make extracts for use in homeopathy.
These pitcher plants are delivered bare-rooted and must be potted upon arrival.
