When do you choose Sphagnum instead of a peat-based soil mix?
While our ready-to-use peat-based soil mix is an excellent 'one size fits all' solution for most carnivorous plants, pure Sphagnum moss offers specific advantages for the more experienced grower or special species:
- For the specialist: Sphagnum is often preferred for more sensitive or special species such as Nepenthes (pitcher plant) and Heliamphora (sun pitcher). The moss provides an extremely airy structure around the roots, which is essential for these species to prevent root rot.
- Natural antibacterial action: Sphagnum naturally contains substances that inhibit the growth of fungi and bacteria, increasing the survival rate of delicate plants.
- Microclimate: Due to its enormous water retention, a small amount of moisture constantly evaporates from the moss. This creates locally higher humidity directly around the leaves and pitchers of the plant.
- Superior Air and Moisture Balance: Unlike traditional peat, Sphagnum has a very open, fibrous structure that does not compact. This ensures maximum air permeability (oxygen for the roots) and a large evaporation surface. As a result, the moss acts as a natural humidifier that slightly increases the local humidity around your tropical plants, which is essential for the growth of healthy pitchers and traps.
