The Drosera binata 'Octopus' is a spectacular, recently introduced giant form of the forked sundew. This selection originated in Germany (introduced by Christian Klein). It is an absolute must-have for lovers of large, imposing carnivorous plants.
Characteristics
- Unique leaf shape: The leaves of a mature 'Octopus' can reach up to 30 cm in diameter. They resemble a giant antler, with the leaves branching into as many as 28 or sometimes even more tips. This complex branching pattern gives the plant its characteristic, tentacle-like appearance from which it gets its name.
- Impressive size: Besides the leaves, the inflorescence is also striking; the flower stems of healthy plants can reach an impressive height of up to 1 meter, making the plant a real eye-catcher in any collection.
Maintenance and care
The 'Octopus' is a vigorous grower that, like other binata forms, undergoes a dormant period in winter. During this period, the plant may die back above ground, only to sprout abundantly again from its rhizomes in spring.
- Size: A very large and dominant grower that needs a lot of space to fully spread its enormous 'antler leaves'.
- Color: Bright green leaves that glisten with many sticky droplets. With sufficient sunlight, the tentacles can develop a healthy yellow-orange blush.
- Location: Place the plant in a very sunny location. Given the size of the plant, a spot with plenty of light is essential to keep the large leaves firm and compact.
- Water: The plant likes 'wet feet'. Ensure a constant layer of water in the saucer. Use only rainwater, distilled water, or osmosis water.
