Cephalotus follicularis or the Australian pitcher plant. Depending on the season, the plants supplied may have a different colour than shown in the picture. For example, in spring, the plants will be greener and later in the season, redder.

The Cephalotus follicularis is a unique, carnivorous plant that is found exclusively in southwestern Australia. Unlike the tall Sarracenia, this species is characterized by a compact growth habit with small, robust pitchers located close to the ground. The pitchers are recognizable by their striking, toothed rim (peristome) and a lid that prevents the pitcher from filling with rainwater. When exposed to sufficient light, the pitchers transform from fresh green to a deep, purplish-red colour.

Key features

  • Compact size: The plant grows slowly and remains low, making it very suitable for smaller spaces or specific terrarium setups.
  • Effective catcher: The mechanism specializes in catching crawling insects, such as ants, which slide into the digestive fluid through the smooth rim.
  • Unique appearance: The detailed structure of the pitchers makes it one of the most sought-after species among collectors.

Care instructions
The Cephalotus requires a slightly different approach compared to other carnivorous plants:

  • Light: The plant requires a lot of light for good colour development, but avoid the brightest midday sun to prevent scorching.
  • Watering: The soil should remain constantly moist, but the plant is sensitive to root rot. Therefore, do not leave the pot permanently in a layer of water, but water from above or via a saucer that you empty. Always use lime-free water (rainwater or osmosis water).
  • Substrate: Use an airy mixture of peat litter and perlite or coarse sand for good drainage.

With the right attention, the Cephalotus follicularis is a strong and long-lived plant that will be a showstopper in your collection for years to come.
