Sun Pitcher Plant
Elegant highland plants from the mysterious tepuis
The Heliamphora, also known as the sun pitcher plant, is one of the most iconic carnivorous plants. They are found on the remote table mountains (Tepuis) of Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil. They are true highland plants, meaning they love intense light, high humidity, and a noticeable cooling down during the night.
Water
Never use tap water. Choose only rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid letting the plant stand with its "feet" in a layer of stagnant water.
Light & Humidity
The sun pitcher plant lives up to its name: it loves plenty of light. In full sun (provided the temperature remains manageable) or under strong grow lights, the pitchers turn a beautiful red and form their characteristic "nectar spoon" (the small lids).
Humidity
Most species require high humidity. However, some hybrids, such as H. heterodoxa x minor, are more tolerant and can adapt to slightly lower indoor humidity.
Temperature
Heliamphoras are not winter hardy and cannot tolerate frost. In summer, you need to be extra vigilant: ideally, the temperature should not exceed 28-30°C. Extreme heat can quickly weaken the plant.
Soil & Substrate
The sun pitcher plant likes a very open and airy mix. A Sphagnum (peat moss) based mixture is standard. You can use both live and dried Sphagnum.
