Live Sphagnum Moss - Sphagnum palustre

Looking for live moss for your carnivorous plants, bog garden, or terrarium? This is top-quality live, green Sphagnum moss, grown locally. It's also ideal for direct propagation as it increases local humidity and has natural anti-fungal properties. Just try propagating some sundew leaves in moist sphagnum moss, keep the container well-watered, and you'll have a very good chance of getting many new, young plants! This is the moss we use ourselves in our carnivorous plant nursery.

Why this moss is unique

Unlike the moss often found in garden centers, our moss does not come from vulnerable natural areas. This moss is 100% grown in the Netherlands/Belgium. Because the moss is grown locally, no natural habitats (where sundews grow, among other things) are destroyed. Furthermore, there's no "junk" in this moss: many suppliers provide moss full of twigs, leaves, or weeds. This moss is pure, clean, ethical, and of the highest quality.

Features

  • Direct growth: Because the moss is alive, it grows with your plants. It forms a beautiful green carpet that constantly renews itself.
  • Type: Live Sphagnum (Peat Moss)
  • Application: Top layer for Sarracenia, Dionaea, Drosera, and orchids, or partly in potting mix.
  • Property: Natural antibacterial action and pH-lowering.
Grower's tip: Always keep the moss moist with rainwater or distilled water. Give it enough light, and you'll see the moss heads become beautifully full and green (or sometimes even reddish)! However, avoid bright, full sun in combination with low humidity.

How to use live Sphagnum?

Live moss is versatile and gives your plants an instant natural "outdoor look".

  • As a top layer: Ideal for bog gardens or on top of pots. It keeps the humidity around your plant's traps extremely high.
  • In potting mixes: Mix it into your substrate for unparalleled aeration and water retention.
  • Indicator plant: If the moss is green and moist, you know your carnivorous plants are happy too!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much moss is in the package? +

The quantity is indicated volumetrically (1 L, 3 L, etc.) and is shipped loosely packed. Sphagnum is naturally airy and resilient. If you compress it, for example, to use it as a potting mix, be aware that the volume will shrink significantly. The weight also varies greatly depending on the humidity at the time of shipping, which is why we maintain a consistent loose volume.

Is all the moss green? +

Not entirely. Only the tips (the growing points) are bright green. The lower part of the stems can be white to light brown (see photos): this is normal and does not mean the moss is dead. This is fully live moss. The white part can regrow under good conditions (sufficient light and humidity).

How do I propagate the moss? +

Very simply: cut off the green tips and place or plant them on a moist substrate in a high-humidity environment. A mini-greenhouse or covered (partially open) container works excellently. The tips will attach themselves and begin to grow. A very light solution of foliar fertilizer (heavily diluted, max. quarter of the recommended dose) can stimulate growth a bit, but it is certainly not necessary.

Can I use the moss as a potting mix? +

Absolutely. Sphagnum is excellently suited as (part of) a potting mix: it retains moisture, provides aeration, and lowers the pH. We do recommend repotting every 1 to 2 years, as the moss will break down and become more compact over time. When repotting, set aside the bottom layer, spread it out in a moist place, and let it regrow. This way, you use your moss very sustainably and can use it as a peat alternative.

What water should I use to moisten the moss? +

Always use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water. Tap water contains too many minerals and lime, which is not ideal. This also applies to the carnivorous plants with which you use the moss.

Can I use the moss outdoors? +

Yes, provided the conditions are right. Sphagnum palustre is reasonably winter hardy and is widely used outdoors in bog gardens with Sarracenia. Avoid bright, dry summer sun without sufficient humidity; the moss prefers indirect light or partial shade during warm periods. In a wet bog garden in full sun, the moss does very well, but it must stay wet. If the moss has dried out? Place it in a more humid spot and it will grow again.

Can I use the moss for rooting cuttings? +

Absolutely, that is even one of its best uses. Moist Sphagnum is ideal for rooting cuttings of sundews (Drosera), Venus flytraps (Dionaea), orchids, or other plants. It is also ideal for helping sick plants that have suffered root rot (e.g., Sarracenia in the winter in a greenhouse) to recover. It increases local humidity and has a natural anti-fungal action, which reduces the chance of cuttings rotting.

My moss looks pale or flat upon arrival, is it still alive? +

Yes, that's normal after transport. Moss can dry out or get compressed during shipping. Place it in a shallow container with a layer of rainwater, give it some indirect light, and within a few days, you'll see the tips perk up and start growing again.
