🌿 Care Guide

Cephalotus follicularis
Australian Pitcher Plant

Comprehensive care information for this unique and challenging pitcher plant

☀️ Light Sun to partial shade
💧 Water Moist, never soaking wet
🌡️ Temperature 15–28°C daytime
🌍 Origin Southwest Australia
🪴 Soil Peat : perlite 50:50
📅 Repotting Young: 1–2 yrs · Old: 3-4 yrs

Cephalotus follicularis is the only species in its genus: a unique Australian pitcher plant native to the southwest coast of Australia. It grows in peat and sand-like soil, with cool winters but rarely frost. This makes it a more demanding plant to cultivate than, for example, Sarracenia: susceptible to root rot, high temperatures, and repotting, but all the more impressive when it thrives.

Origin

This plant genus contains only one species: C. follicularis. As the Dutch name suggests, the plant is found in Australia, along the southwest coast. It grows there in peat and sand-like soil. In that region, winters are cool, but it rarely freezes. The plant is therefore not winter hardy and must overwinter indoors or in a frost-free greenhouse in our climate.

Water

Never use tap water. Always choose rainwater, distilled water, or osmosis/RO water. Keep the soil well-moist but certainly not soaking wet, Cephalotus is sensitive to root rot and does not like overly wet soil mix.

Method: Place the pot on a saucer and water via the saucer. Let the saucer dry out completely before refilling. This prevents the roots from continuously standing in stagnant water.
Difference from other carnivorous plants: Unlike Sarracenia or Dionaea, Cephalotus should not permanently stand in water. This significantly increases the risk of root rot.

Light

Cephalotus is flexible regarding light and can stand in full sun or partial shade. In full sun, the plant turns a beautiful red: the more light, the more intense the color.

Growing indoors: Cephalotus does excellent under strong artificial light (LED), 12–14 hours of light per day, year-round. This is also a good solution if summer temperatures outside get too high.

At temperatures above 30°C in a greenhouse or in a hot location, it is better to choose a spot with partial shade. The plant can tolerate a lot of light, but it combines poorly with extreme heat.

Temperature

The ideal daytime temperature for Cephalotus is between 15°C and 28°C. Above 35°C, it becomes dangerous. High temperatures can quickly cause root rot.

Caution above 30°C. In a greenhouse in mid-summer, it can quickly get too hot. In that case, find a cooler spot with partial shade, or place the plant indoors under artificial light. Cephalotus likes it to cool down a bit at night; a temperature difference between day and night is favorable but not essential.
No frost. The plant cannot tolerate frost and must be kept indoors or in a completely frost-free greenhouse in winter. Only older, well-hardened plants can withstand very light frost.

Soil & repotting

Cephalotus is sensitive to repotting: do this as little as possible and with due care. The growing medium must have an open, airy structure.

Recommended soil mix: peat : perlite in a 50:50 ratio, or a sphagnum mix. The mix is deliberately made more airy than for other carnivorous plants; this is essential to prevent root rot.

Repotting frequency: young plants every 1–2 years, older plants every 3-4 years. Disturb the roots as little as possible when repotting.
