A Sarracenia that really shows off in the autumn: Sarracenia leucophylla 'Dionne'

If you love Sarracenias that become increasingly spectacular throughout the season, then 'Dionne' is one to keep an eye on. This special Sarracenia leucophylla was selected for its exceptionally intense pink-purple color. Especially in the autumn, it turns into a striking pink eye-catcher.

What makes it special?
The power of 'Dionne' lies in the color and shape of its pitchers. The young pitchers start as a pale pink Sarracenia leucophylla, but as they age, the outside of the pitchers becomes increasingly intense purple. Meanwhile, the inside of the pitcher remains a beautiful red and white, creating a stunning contrast. 

With pitchers of about 60-70 cm (and sometimes even larger), it is certainly not a small specimen. Especially when several mature pitchers develop their pink color at the same time, it is a plant that immediately draws attention.

The story behind it
'Dionne' has a lovely Dutch history. The plant was grown from seed in 2010 by R. van Ool in Uden. Among the seedlings, one plant stood out immediately due to its exceptionally intense pink autumn color. That special plant was subsequently vegetatively propagated and officially registered as a cultivar in 2017.

The mother plant is the legendary 'Helmut's Delight', known for its elegant pitchers and strong veins. These strong characteristics are immediately evident in this 'Dionne'. The bright color likely comes from a pink plant that was kept in the same greenhouse. 

The name 'Dionne' is a tribute to the wife of the original grower. This makes it not only a striking cultivar, but also one with a personal story behind it.

Characteristics:

• Height: Approximately 60-70 cm tall. Taller under optimal conditions.
• Appearance: Pink and white pitchers that turn intensely purple on the outside later in the season.
• Hardiness: Just like other Sarracenia leucophylla, 'Dionne' can overwinter outdoors with the right protection and care. For the best pitchers, an unheated greenhouse is recommended.
• Placement: As sunny as possible. Plenty of direct sunlight ensures the most beautiful colors.
