Sarracenia flava var. rugelii - Carnivorous pitcher plant

Sarracenia flava var. rugelii is one of the most recognizable forms of the yellow trumpet pitcher plant. Not a complex hybrid, but a variety with sleek, green pitchers with a blotch in the throat.

What characterizes this plant?
The pitchers are uniformly green to yellow-green, which provides a calm appearance in a collection. The most striking feature is the dark red blotch in the throat, just below the hood. This contrast is precisely what distinguishes rugelii from other flava varieties. The plant grows beautifully upright and often produces large, yellow flowers in spring.

Good to know
These plants have been kept pure and propagated by division or seed to preserve the variety's characteristics. It is a strong grower that requires little, as long as it stays wet and gets enough light. In winter, the plant goes dormant, and the pitchers slowly die back, only to vigorously sprout again in spring.

Characteristics:

  • Height: Averages 70 to 80 cm tall.
  • Appearance: Completely green pitcher with a sharply defined red blotch at the opening.
  • Hardy: Perfectly suitable for the Dutch climate; can stay outdoors all year round.
  • Placement: Prefers full sun all day for the strongest growth.
