Sarracenia flava 'Goldie'
For lovers of bright, pure colors, Sarracenia flava 'Goldie' is an absolute reference plant. Where many flava varieties develop strong red veins or dark pitchers, this selection focuses entirely on an intense, uniform yellow-green to golden-yellow palette.
Origin and background
The history of 'Goldie' is inextricably linked to the well-known British nursery Marston Exotics (Adrian Slack, later P&J plants). Around 1994, about 10,000 S. flava seedlings were growing there. A regular customer, T. Margetts from Worcester, bought a large batch of these young plants at the time due to their interesting variation.
When Margetts had to dismantle his collection in 2004 due to illness, Marston Exotics bought the plants back. After spending a winter outdoors, one specific seedling immediately stood out in the spring due to its shiny, butter-yellow color. T. Margetts confirmed that this seedling had originally come from Marston. Thus, this unique cultivar returned to the nursery to eventually conquer the hobby as 'Goldie'.
An exception: Cultivation advice for our climate
Although most Sarracenia thrive excellent in a greenhouse, 'Goldie' is one of the rare and exceptional plants that does better outdoors than in a greenhouse in our Western European climate. This is likely because the plant contains a lot of genetic material originating from the Carolinas.
In a greenhouse, the temperature can rise quickly, which sometimes comes at the expense of the color intensity in this specific cultivar. Outdoors, the plant benefits from natural temperature fluctuations and unfiltered UV radiation. To bring out that iconic, deep golden-yellow color to the maximum, we therefore strongly recommend growing this plant outdoors: for example, in a full bog garden or a large outdoor pot in an unshaded spot.
Characteristics:
- Appearance: Large, wide pitchers with a uniform golden-yellow to chartreuse-green color; almost free of red veins.
- Origin: Selected from Marston Exotics seedlings (ca. 1994).
- Cultivation method: Preferably cultivate outdoors; the open air and direct UV radiation ensure the best color development.
- Hardiness: Excellent; as a native bog plant, perfectly resistant to our winters, provided the root ball does not freeze completely dry.
- A strong, vital grower that, when grown outdoors, transforms into a bright yellow highlight in the collection. Ideal for the expert who prefers outdoor cultivation.
