x courtii, giant form M. Soper
KD-H83 x courtii, giant dark purple pitchers, purpurea x psittacina Oke (SH065 Matt Soper)
Matt Soper's SH065 is a hybrid that comes directly from the purpurea × psittacina cross. The result is a plant with imposing, dark purple pitchers that immediately stands out due to its size.
What makes it special? Especially the enormous size of the plant. This is what you get when you cross two purpurea-related genes with an eye on size and depth of color. While standard purpurea × psittacina hybrids can be quite compact, SH065 goes a bit larger and a bit more intensely purple. This is a plant from Matt Soper's selection work, which means he doesn't just cross randomly.
Characteristics:
- Height/Size: Giant, much larger than you'd expect from purpurea × psittacina hybrids.
- Appearance: Imposing, dark purple pitchers. Deep color in strong light; also a deeper red in winter.
- Growth habit: Fast, good rooting.
- Care requirements: Direct sunlight for that dark purple color. Standard Sarracenia care, tray method.
- An important tip: Because psittacina crosses naturally catch insects less efficiently than other Sarracenia species, you can carefully fertilize mature plants to allow the large traps to grow to their full potential. A few pellets of coated fertilizer per growing season are enough, no need to overdo it, but the difference in size and vigor is noticeable.
A selection that proves that purpurea × psittacina still has a lot to offer if you work selectively. This is your plant if you want a plant with dark color and size.
