D. adelae
Drosera adelae ("Queensland sisters")
Drosera adelae is an elegant carnivorous plant from the tropical rainforests of Queensland, Australia. Along with Drosera prolifera and Drosera schizandra, it belongs to the famous Queensland Sisters: three subtropical sundew species that naturally grow in moist, shaded forests. Thanks to its long, glossy leaves and abundance of sticky dew drops, D. adelae is a real eye-catcher.
What makes this plant special? D. adelae produces long, narrow leaves that grow from a compact rosette. The leaves are richly covered with shimmering trapping tentacles with which the plant effortlessly catches small insects. While many sundew species require a lot of direct sunlight, D. adelae thrives best in a shady spot without bright midday sun. This makes it an ideal species for a terrarium, windowsill, or semi-open cloche.
Drosera adelae is a subtropical species and grows all year round. The plant does not go dormant in winter and absolutely cannot tolerate frost. Keep the temperature preferably above 15°C. High humidity is appreciated, although this species can also adapt well to normal indoor conditions over time. Due to its preference for a humid and sheltered climate, D. adelae is one of the few sundew species that is excellently suited for a semi-open cloche.
Under good conditions, the plant regularly forms new shoots from the roots, creating a beautiful cluster of plants over time.
Characteristics:
- Size: A compact to medium-sized sundew with leaves approximately 10 to 25 cm long.
- Color: Fresh green leaves with red tentacles; with sufficient light, the trapping tentacles (trichomes) turn a deeper red while the leaves remain green.
- Location: Bright, indirect light or light partial shade. Avoid bright, direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Always keep the potting soil moist. Use only rainwater, distilled water, or osmosis water.
