Drosera binata var. multifida f. extrema (Ian Salter)

The Drosera binata var. multifida f. extrema is a striking and immediately noticeable carnivorous plant. What makes this particular sundew so popular is its unparalleled complexity; this is the most branched Drosera binata in cultivation that we have seen so far!

Unique leaf shape: While the standard binata only splits in two, the 'f. extrema' goes many steps further. The leaves repeatedly split (up to 30 to 40 times per leaf), resulting in a spectacular, fern-like, and extremely complex trapping net. This gives the plant an impressive, lush, and almost alien appearance. It is the ultimate plant for those who want to experience the absolute limit of the Drosera binata family.

Spectacular growth habit: Due to the enormous number of branches and the length of the leaves, this plant tends to trail as it grows larger. It is therefore highly recommended to grow it in a hanging basket. Alternatively, you can place it somewhere where the leaves can grow through for extra support, such as a small trellis or among sturdier neighboring plants. Naturally, the plant often grows among other shrubs in grasses.

Maintenance and care: The multifida f. extrema is a vigorous grower that goes dormant in winter. During this dormant period, the plant may completely die back above ground, only to emerge from its rhizomes in spring, larger and stronger than ever before. Please note: this plant is not fully hardy outdoors, so be careful during severe frost!

Characteristics:

  • Size: A large and voluminous grower with very long, extremely branched leaves that form a spectacular, trailing bush.
  • Color: Beautiful green to red basal leaves densely covered with glistening, sticky trapping tentacles that glow bright red in the sun.
  • Location: Plenty of sunlight is essential. This not only promotes the production of countless glistening dew drops but also provides the plant with the energy needed to produce its gigantic leaves.
  • Water: Always keep wet. As with all carnivorous plants, use only rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.
